Getter Robo G - Getter Liger (Star Arrow)

Our second super robot from Getter Robo G, it's the speedy Getter Liger! Produced by Bandai as part of its Soul of Chogokin line, it's a faithful representation of the Getter Robo's Liger formation. The Liger is specially adapted to operations on land, especially underground. The Getter Liger's pilot, Hayato, skillfully uses the giant drill of his robot both as a weapon and a tool. Hit the jump to learn more about this lanky, stylish mecha!

In terms of design and legacy, looking at the Getter Liger (or Star Arrow in Starvengers) its general "look" has continued over the years. While the other Getters and super robots were heroically proportioned and classic mecha, the Getter Liger's slim profile brings to mind things like the Eva units from Evangelion. For its time, the skinny Liger may have been an oddball, but it really is the ancestor of a lot of modern mecha design (just my opinion).

The Getter Liger was one of the earlier Soul of Chogokin releases but it has a decent amount of articulation. The knees are double jointed, probably as a result of the slimness of the legs overall. There isn't much movement in the hips from side to side, but the joints are nice and tight and smooth. This is one robot that actually looks better in more static poses than in dynamic ones. It gives off a loner vibe, much like it's pilot Hayato Jin aka Paladin Spencer in Starvengers. The toy itself has good weight despite its skinny body. The head, wing jets, and hand attachments are all plastic, everything else is diecast.

The Getter Liger comes accessorized with several hand attachments, a chain, a missile launcher arm that opens to show the missile, and a solid missile launcher arm.

The small wings on top of the head are movable, going from a down position that resembles the Liger jet to a raised position when it's in super robot form.

Getter Liger's attacks consist of the Drill Arm, Chain Attack, Liger Missile and Mach Special. The first three are probably pretty self-explanatory, but the Mach Special (Arrow Speed in the U.S.), utilizes the quickness of the Liger formation to basically become the Flash and attack his opponent at superspeed.

Check out this Super Robot Wars clip to see the Getter Liger's attacks!

The Liger jet that is packed in with the figure is also mostly diecast. Out of all the jets, I think this one is my favorite, it looks fast and agile.

Unfortunately, the chain attachment hangs limp unless you give it a little assist. I know with various Myth Cloth Andromeda Shun releases that Bandai has made plastic fixed pose chains. That's something I think would look nice here, but I think this particular toy is old enough at this point that Bandai wouldn't bother doing that. Ah well, a man can dream.

I don't remember the Getter Liger actually having a real hand in the show, but the toy version has a fist and an open hand that moonlights as another handshake hand, or a Queen of England waving hand.

Hello!

Details on the feet are nice, with rocket thrusters part of the mold. I should note that because of the tear drop shap or Getter Liger's feet, it sometimes can't hold a pose. As I said above, this robot isn't the most dynamic one out there. Also, most of the weight is in the top half of the robot, so when not being handled it's best to pop him onto his included stand.

Ah, the handshake. New Getter 1 sure is a friendly fella.

PROS

The Getter Liger is a fun and affordable chunk of diecast. It's a unique looking robot that will really pop on your shelf. Metal content is high and unlike the Getter Poseidon, Bandai accesorized it with all the things it needs to replicate attacks from the show. Well, except for the Mach Special, but you could just run around while holding it, but then you might be a little...Mach Special yourself.

One thing I'd like to point out is the paint job on this chogokin. This is probably my favorite color scheme out of all the super robot toys I have. While all three Getter Robos share a combination of red, blue, yellow and shiny chrome, the Getter Liger has a lot more blue. While the red and yellow colors are glossy chromatics, the blue is a sparkling blue metallic that looks like the paint on a '68 Mustang.

CONS

He's a bit top heavy. Other than that it's just the limitation of the poseability in the legs and feet. Really though, these are very minor things, although I understand how some people wouldn't like them.

VERDICT

The Getter Liger is relatively cheap, easy to find and just rock solid in terms of quality, fit and finish. I recommend Getter Liger to anyone looking to get into diecast toy or robot toy collecting. Pretty much as must have for Getter fans too. Once you get Liger, Poseidon and Dragon together, they become a real centerpiece to build around.

  1. congratulation to the author for the very well details on reviewing about this Getter Robo. I cant wait to include this at my collection from PIJ. Well, the cons can be handle properly and avoid such damage when it is well care of.
