Revoltech - Lupin the 3rd

Today we here at Getter Newtype bring you Kaiyodo's Lupin the 3rd Revoltech toy. It's a blast to fiddle with so check it out!

I'm still learning to work the new camera, so apologies in advance for the overly bright pics. Anyways, Lupin the 3rd is an internationally renowned thief and adventurer. He starred in his eponymous show as well as several OVA's and theatrical movies. Lupin is the grandson of the thief Arsène Lupin. The character of Arsène Lupin is from a French series of novels by Maurice LeBlanc. Published around the same time as the Sherlock Holmes mysteries, Arsène Lupin was a gentleman thief.

In Japan, the manga artist and writer known as Monkey Punch made his character the grandson of the famous gentleman thief. Because he didn't actually obtain the rights to use the name from LeBlanc's estate, Lupin the 3rd often met copyright challenges outside of Japan. Today, the copyrights have expired and Lupin the 3rd has been released all over the world.

Lupin is many things, a thief with a heart of gold, a pervert, an acrobat, a fighter and a clown. Along with his friends, Yakuza hitman Jigen, and modern-day ronin Goemon, Lupin travels the world looking for his next big score.

This is probably my favorite Revoltech I have ever owned. I enjoy the character, and even though I was skeptical about the revoltech joints looking weird, I have to say it's a great toy.

Lupin comes with a crapload of spare hands, 4 different heads, a folding chair, a small café table, a hook and rope attachment, and my favorite accessory ever, a glass of booze. The figure radiates his animated counterparts charm and easy-going coolness. How cool is Lupin the 3rd, you ask? Spike Spiegel from Cowboy Bebop was mainly inspired by Lupin. That's awesome.

Pros

A cheap Revoltech toy that captures one of anime's famous characters. All the accessories are actually fun to pop on. I like that the container for the spare parts doubles as a safe for Lupin the crack. The thin build of his body plus the revoltech joints make him super-poseable.

Cons

His shoulders are a little weird. He is wearing a suit coat, so they made his shoulders a separate triangular free-moving piece between his arm and body. They're not bad, but they can break up the overall smoothness. Also, maybe it's just mine, but because most of the revoltech joints are the really small ones, sometimes the grip is a little wonky. I tried removing the head and took out his head, the joint, and the neck in one pull. Luckily it's revoltech so everything goes back together easily.

Verdict

A super fun little toy of a great character. If you like Kaiyodo's Revoltech line, but are feeling a little burnt out on robots, give Lupin the 3rd a try.
