Getter Newtype proudly presents part 1 of the Saint Seiya Newborn Cloth collection reviews: Dragon Shiryu.
Shiryu is one of the five main bronze saints of Saint Seiya. He is sent by the Graude foundaion to the Five Old Peaks in China to train under Master Dohko( who is later revealed to be the gold saint of the Libra Constellation.)
Shiryu obtains the the Dragon cloth by reversing the flow of the Rozan waterfall, whose water bathed the armor for 200 years and strengthened it. The Dragon cloth contains the Dragon Shield, which is said to be unbreakable and the strongest amongst the saints of Athena. Both of these facts are revealed to be untrue as many of his opponents manage to break the legendary shield and we later find out that the Libra cloth contains the strongest shield(s) of all of the saints of Athena.

Pros
For the most part, Bandai did a good job at recreating Shiryu’s armor. The figure also has a nice mix of die cast and plastic, providing nice feel to it. Lastly, this figure can be found for really cheap! Lots of places like Hobby Link Japan usually have it on sale for about 10-15 bucks.
Cons
Wow, where do I start? I am not knocking Bandai, as I know this is one of the first Myth Cloth ever released, but I do have to mention the flaws I found with this figure. First and foremost, the face sculpt for the V2 saint is pretty darn ugly. They are oversized and not very accurate. We here at Getter Newtype Reviews like to refer to this as the Baby Head Syndrome, because it looks like a baby when their head is disproportionately bigger than the body.
The tiara for this figure is a major flaw in the design as it is a little bigger than it should be.
The yellow parts on mine actually bent while it was in storage |
The hair is also quite weird, since this is before Bandai figured out how to do the hair for the saints with long hair.
There are three parts to the main to hair |
and two "antenna" hair on the sides |
Another annoyance I found with the figure is the leg armor, which will likes to slide down the leg all the time! The weird thing is that usually only one leg armor does it , it is never both that decide to slide down together.
Finally , color of the armor is a bit off. Its kind of a radioactive green , as opposed to the darker green that it should be.
Verdict
A flawed figure that is overshadowed by the later releases in the line. I would only really recommend this to anybody who was looking for a cheap figure. I know the V3 can be hard to find and thus is expensive, so it makes this a good starter figure for those on a budget. Just be warned , that baby head can be an eyesore.
