Getter Robo G - Getter Poseidon (Star Poseidon)

Let me start this off by saying one thing. I love all things Getter Robo. This blog is called Getter Newtype because I am the half of the review crew that is obsessed with all things Getter. I first got hooked as a young kid watching Starvengers, the Force Five translation of Getter Robo G.

And yes, Colonel Fuhrer is basically Hitler with devil horns on his head.

Anyways, on to today's review! Today I will be taking a look at the third form of the Getter G team's super robot, the Getter Poseidon (or Star Poseidon in the U.S.). More after the jump!

Getter Robo G was the second super robot developed by Professor Saotome after the destruction of the original Getter Robo and the death of one of its pilots, Musashi. Retaining the original's ability to combine into 3 distinct formations, the Poseidon replaced the Getter Three as the powerhouse robot.

Getter Poseidon was also unique in that it was piloted by the new guy, Benkei, known in Starvengers by the awesomely random name of "Foul Tip". Hey, it's better than his official U.S. name, Elmer O. Fossil! He served as the token fat guy who hangs out with the little kid, ably filling the role that Musashi's death had left open. For the record, the other two pilots, hotheaded Ryoma, and cool Hayato were renamed Homer and Paladin respectively.

The Getter Poseidon was my first Soul of Chogokin ever. So, this stocky linebacker of a robot is basically at fault for starting me down the path of building a collection. It stands 16.5 cm tall (or just over 6.5 inches). The toy is solid diecast except for the hands, head and missiles on the back. It has nice heft and you can really feel the quality in your hands. There are some real neat details, like the cowling that raises up to show the turbine underneath.

Getter Poseidon's attacks include the Finger Net, Strong Missile, and Getter Cyclone.

No details were spared as they even replicated Getter Poseidon's feet jets. That's one of the best things about the earlier Soul of Chogokin releases, they were very high quality, but simple and sturdy enough that you weren't scared of handling them like some later, more intricate and finicky releases.

Also included were a set of tank treads that swap out with the legs of the robot. These were used during underwater fights on the sea floor which were this formation's speciality. With a name like Getter Poseidon, it better not stink underwater!

The Getter Robo releases also came packed with their respective jet unit. It's also mostly diecast and the cockpit separates in order to recreate some of the combination sequences from the show. There is a stand for the jet that combines with the other two stands that hold Getter Liger and Getter Dragon.

PROS

Like I said, this toy's strength is its simplicity. It looks darn near identical to its animated incarnation and retains that cool 70's funk that I really dig in robots. Its colors really pop and the diecast content is high. Even better, this toy can be had for a decent price if you do a little digging.

CONS

As pretty as the paint is on the Getter Poseidon, it will get small chips and scratches. Mostly because of the metal cowling rubbing on the metal of the Poseidon's belly. It's not a huge gripe, but be careful and just be aware if he takes a shelf dive the paint will scratch on the belly. Secondly, the tank feet, two sets of hands (closed and open) and shoulder missiles are all the accessories for the toy in there. I feel they could have thrown in a set of hands with some sort of Finger Net attachment, because it's one of the coolest attacks the Getter Poseidon has.

Verdict

Obviously this toy has a lot of sentimental value as one of the robots from my favorite super robot show as well as being my first Soul of Chogokin. With that said, if you don't buy Getter Poseidon, you aren't missing anything. I'd say for Getter Robo/Starvenger fans it's a definite buy, or for the Soul of Chogokin completionist. Simple and sturdy is the name of the game with Getter Poseidon and depending on your point of view, that's either a plus or minus.

I'll leave you with a couple of just for fun pics.

  1. Hi, sorry to make you wait on a reply. This particular toy I actually got by giving some friends money when they went to an anime convention. Stuff can be bought for dealers cheaper that way, sometimes. If the cons aren't your scene there's always the good old stand-by of eBay. Amazon, Hobbylink Japan, Anime-Export, and BigBadToyStore are also frequently used by both of us.
